ENTREVISTA EN ESPAÑOL:
Bienvenido Samuel, y gracias por acceder tan amablemente a esta pequeña entrevista. ¿Cómo estás en estos tiempos difíciles?
“Estoy bien, gracias. Espero que usted y todos los que están leyendo esto también lo estén. Gracias por invitarme a esta entrevista.”
Empecemos por la pregunta que todos nos hacemos. ¿Cómo es que un joven británico acaba siendo fanático de la Roma? ¿La familia, los amigos … tienen alguna relación con eso?
“Es una historia bastante complicada para mí. Cuando era joven, tenía un equipo favorito de cada país y la Roma era mi equipo italiano. Honestamente, no puedo recordar exactamente por qué, ¡pero eso es lo que elegí! Luego, cuando tenía 15 años, mi familia se fue de vacaciones a Roma y fuimos a un partido del equipo. Fue solo un amistoso, pero me enamoré del ambiente. Después de ese partido comencé a averiguar más sobre el club y vi más partidos en la televisión. ¡No tardé en darme cuenta de que ahora era romanista a tiempo completo!”
¿Cuál fue el primer contacto o el primer recuerdo que tuviste con el equipo? ¿En un partido de Champions?
“Cuando era más joven, la Roma jugó varias veces contra el Manchester United en Liga de Campeones. No fui a ninguno de los partidos, pero mi familia conocía a un aficionado del Manchester United que sí fue y me trajo programas y una bufanda. Luego, unos seis años después, como mencioné, el primer juego al que fui tuvo un gran impacto en mí. Fue un amistoso de pretemporada contra el Fenerbahce en el Estadio Olímpico. Francesco Totti marcó un penalti, pero luego el Fenerbahce anotó tres goles. Mattia Destro anotó dos veces al final para volver a poner el marcador en 3-3. Aunque no fue un partido competitivo, la remontada fue realmente emocionante. Y luego, unos años después, el siguiente partido de la Roma al que fui fue una remontada aún mejor, la famosa victoria sobre Barcelona en 2018 … Estar en ese partido fue increíble y nunca lo olvidaré.”
Si hablamos de referente “giallorossis”, quién ha sido / o es, el jugador que ha dejado una marca especial en tu corazón.
“Como era de esperar, Francesco Totti siempre será mi jugador favorito. Recuerdo haberlo visto en la Copa del Mundo de 2006 que ganó Italia y desde entonces me fascinó. Verlo marcar en vivo en el estadio todos esos años después es una experiencia por la que siempre estaré agradecido. Pero aparte de él, como esa es una respuesta bastante obvia, diría Lorenzo Pellegrini. Recuerdo haberlo visto jugar como capitán del Primavera en un partido de la UEFA Youth League que se transmitió en línea una vez. Verlo partir de ahí para convertirse eventualmente en capitán del equipo senior ha sido un viaje especial.
Asimismo, también me sentí honrado de haber visto a Edin Dzeko jugar para el club. No nací cuando Totti debutó, pero ver a otro gran goleador desde el inicio de su carrera en la Roma ha sido increíble. Se ha sentido como ser testigo de la historia y, como Totti, he tenido la suerte de ver a Dzeko marcar en directo en el estadio.”
Estar en otro país con una cultura futbolística completamente diferente … ¿Cómo crees que se ve el fútbol italiano allí?
“Creo que todavía hay algunas opiniones negativas sobre el fútbol italiano por parte de algunos ingleses que no lo ven mucho. Sin embargo, creo que más gente se está dando cuenta de que la calidad en la liga está creciendo. Hay una comunidad sólida de personas interesadas en la Serie A en el Reino Unido, no solo fanáticos de la Roma, sino también fanáticos de muchos equipos diferentes, y es bueno ser parte de eso.”
Cuéntanos un poco cómo es ser un hincha de la Roma a distancia. ¿Existe una gran comunidad de hinchas de la Roma en Inglaterra?
“Sí, he encontrado una buena cantidad de aficionados de la Roma en Inglaterra y todos somos apasionados. Soy miembro del club de fans de AS Roma North UK, que es uno de los pocos grupos que hay en Gran Bretaña. En realidad, no he conocido a muchos fanáticos de la Roma en persona, pero he podido conectarme con muchos en Twitter, donde hay una comunidad cercana de fanáticos del mismo país. También tenemos mucha suerte de que la mayoría de los partidos de Roma estén en televisión en el Reino Unido, por lo que es bastante fácil seguirlos. Como dije, es bueno ser parte de una comunidad de fanáticos. Todos tenemos diferentes razones para apoyar a la Roma, pero todos estamos conectados por esa pasión.”
Planeta Roma cubre todas las novedades del equipo femenino, y quién mejor que tú, para contárnoslo.
“Gracias por esas amables palabras. Hay mucha gente con mucho conocimiento sobre el equipo, por lo que ser descrito como una eminencia en el tema es algo que aprecio. En primer lugar, me gustaría felicitar a Planeta Roma por el gran trabajo que hacen cubriendo el equipo. Como sabrás, es un momento emocionante para la plantilla. Esta es nuestra tercera temporada en el fútbol femenino y el equipo ha progresado mucho. Para mí, poder escribir sobre ellos con regularidad para el sitio web oficial del club, utilizando un formato que se me ocurrió, es un honor del que estoy realmente orgulloso.”
¿Cómo ves al equipo en la semifinal de Copa?
“Creo que el equipo entrará en este partido motivado y confiado, pero también consciente de que necesita volver a jugar al máximo. La atención se ha centrado en la copa desde hace algunas semanas y, tras ganar el partido de ida, el espíritu de equipo es fuerte. Ganar el último partido de liga contra la Fiorentina antes de este partido de copa también fue muy importante, por lo que ahora podemos esperar el partido de vuelta.”
Mirando un poco más al futuro, y viendo la superioridad de Juventus y Milán esta temporada, ¿cree que la Roma, y toda su estructura, podrá alcanzar a estos dos clubes?
“Si el equipo juega como lo ha hecho desde principios de 2021, por supuesto que es posible. Creo que el partido contra la Juventus en la Supercopa de enero fue un punto de inflexión. Perdimos, pero logramos ir a la prórroga y eso demostró cómo podemos competir con la mentalidad adecuada. Desde entonces, la forma ha sido sobresaliente. Ojalá llegue alguna recompensa esta temporada, pero si podemos llevarla a la próxima, soy optimista para un año fuerte. Obviamente, para ponernos al día con esos dos clubes, tenemos que ser casi perfectos. Pero he visto muchas señales positivas en los últimos meses.”
¿Cómo ve a los Friedkins a este respecto? ¿Cree que se hará una inversión como se ha hecho en los grandes clubes femeninos europeos?
“Siempre es difícil predecir el futuro, especialmente cuando no se conoce a los propietarios personalmente. Pero creo que el club está estableciendo las estructuras para el éxito futuro. Ya hemos visto muchas renovaciones de contratos para algunos de los jugadores más importantes en las últimas semanas, por lo que está claro que se están preparando para el futuro. Será interesante ver qué tipo de jugadores llegan en la ventana de transferencia de verano, pero lo prometedor es que hemos visto la intención de mantener y construir alrededor de nuestros mejores jugadores.”
Nos gustaría que tuvieses la oportunidad de compartir tu trabajo. ¿Qué es Giallorossi Yorkshire y cómo nació?
“Gracias por darme esta oportunidad. Giallorossi Yorkshire es un sitio web que comencé en 2017. En ese momento, no conocía a ningún otro fanático de la Roma, así que quería encontrar una manera de conectarme con algunos. Configuré mi cuenta de Twitter para hacerlo y luego comencé a escribir en mi sitio web también. Siempre me ha gustado escribir, así que era algo que quería hacer durante mucho tiempo.
Yorkshire es el condado de Inglaterra de donde soy, e inicialmente quería encontrar otros fanáticos de la Roma cercanos a mí. ¡Pero a través del sitio web me he conectado con fans de todo el mundo! No tengo una gran audiencia, pero los que me visitan provienen de muchos lugares diferentes. Quizás algún día me gustaría organizar un evento donde los aficionados de la Roma de Yorkshire puedan reunirse, pero por ahora, Giallorossi Yorkshire es simplemente un sitio web para compartir mis pensamientos sobre el club.
Todavía me apasiona y escribo con regularidad. No tengo tanto contenido como Planeta Roma, pero trato de publicar artículos de opinión, noticias y algunos cuestionarios allí tan a menudo como puedo. Me gusta hacer artículos que tengan un nicho en inglés, pero también que cubran todos los aspectos de Roma. Una entrevista que hice para mi sitio web fue en realidad lo que me llevó a que me pidieran que escribiera para el sitio web del club sobre el equipo femenino, así que definitivamente ha valido la pena.

Greetings Samuel, and thank you for agreeing so kindly to this little interview. How are you in these difficult times?
«I’m doing well thank you. I hope you and everyone who is reading this are too. Thanks for inviting me to this interview.»
Lets start by the beginning. How does a young British man end up being a Roma fan? Does family, friends … have any relation with that?
«It’s quite a complicated story for me. When I was young, I had a favourite team from each country and Roma were my Italian team. Honestly, I can’t remember exactly why, but that’s who I chose! Then when I was 15, my family went on holiday to Rome and we went to a Roma match. It was just a friendly, but I fell in love with the atmosphere. After that game I started finding out more about the club and watched more games on TV. It didn’t take long for me to realise I was now a full-time Romanista!»
What was the first contact, or your first memory that you had with the team? In a Champions League match?
«When I was younger, Roma played Manchester United a few times in the Champions League. I didn’t go to any of the games but my family knew a Manchester United fan who did go and brought me back programmes and a scarf. Then about six years later, as I mentioned, the first game I went to had a big impact on me. It was a pre-season friendly against Fenerbahce at Stadio Olimpico. Francesco Totti scored a penalty, but then Fenerbahce scored three goals. Mattia Destro scored twice late on to get the score back to 3-3. Even though it wasn’t a competitive match, the comeback was really exciting. And then a few years later, the next Roma game I went to was an even better comeback, the famous win over Barcelona in 2018… Being at that game was incredible and I will never forget it.»
If we talk about “giallorossis” references, who has been / or is, the player who has left a special mark on your heart.
«As you might expect, Francesco Totti will always be my favourite player. I remember watching him at the 2006 World Cup that Italy won and was fascinated by him ever since. Seeing him score live at the stadium all those years later is an experience I will always be thankful for. But other than him, as that’s quite an obvious answer, I would say Lorenzo Pellegrini. I remember watching him play as captain for the Primavera in a UEFA Youth League game that was streamed online once. To see him go from there to eventually become captain of the senior team has been a special journey.
Likewise, I’ve also felt honoured to have watched Edin Dzeko playing for the club. I wasn’t born when Totti made his debut but to see another great goalscorer from the start of his Roma career has been incredible. It has felt like witnessing history and like Totti, I’ve been lucky enough to see Dzeko score live at the stadium.»
Being in another country with a completely different football culture … How do you think Italian football is seen there?»
I think there are still some negative views towards Italian football from some English people who don’t watch it much. However, I think more people are realising that the quality in the league is growing. There is a strong community of people who are interested in Serie A in the UK – not just Roma fans but fans of lots of different teams – and it’s nice to be part of that.»
Tell us a little about what it’s like to be a Roma fan from a distance. Is there a large community of Roma fans in England?
«Yes, I’ve found a good amount of Roma fans in England and we are all passionate. I’m a member of the AS Roma North UK fan club which is one of a few different groups there are in Britain. I haven’t actually met lots of Roma fans in person but have been able to connect with plenty on Twitter, where there is a close community of supporters from the same country. We are quite lucky as well that most of the Roma games are on TV in the UK so it’s quite easy to follow them. As I said, it’s nice to be part of a community of fans. We all have different reasons for supporting Roma but are all connected by that passion.»

«Thanks for those kind words. There are a lot of people with a lot of knowledge about the team so to be described as an authority on the subject is something I appreciate. First of all, I’d like to commend Planeta Roma for the great work you do covering the team. As you’ll be aware, it’s an exciting time for the squad. This is our third season in women’s football now and the team has made a lot of progress. For me, being able to write about them regularly for the club’s official website, using a format I came up with myself, is an honour that I’m really proud of.»
How do you see the team going back to the Cup semifinals?
«I think the team will go into this match motivated and confident, but also aware they need to play at their best again. The focus has been on the cup for a few weeks now and after winning the first leg, the team spirit is strong. Winning the last league game against Fiorentina before this cup match was very important too, so now we can look forward to the second leg.»
Looking a little more to the future, and seeing the superiority of Juventus and Milan this season, do you think that Roma, and its entire structure, will be able to catch up with these two clubs?
«If the team plays as they have done since the start of 2021, then of course it’s possible. I think the game against Juventus in the Supercoppa in January was a turning point. We lost but managed to go to extra time and that showed how we can compete with the right mentality. Since then, the form has been outstanding. Hopefully some reward comes this season but if we can carry it into next season, I’m optimistic for a strong year. Obviously, to catch up with those two clubs, we have to be almost perfect. But I’ve seen a lot of positive signs in the last few months.»
How do you see the Friedkins in this regard. Do you think an investment will be made as has been done in the big European women’s clubs?
«It’s always hard to predict the future, especially when you don’t know the owners personally. But I think the club are putting the structures in place for future success. We’ve already seen a lot of contract renewals for some of the most important players in recent weeks so it’s clear that they are building for the future. It will be interesting to see what kind of players arrive in the summer transfer window but the promising thing is that we have seen an intention to keep and build around our best players.»
We would like you to have the opportunity to share your work. What is Giallorossi Yorkshire, and how was it born?
«Thank you for giving me this opportunity. Giallorossi Yorkshire is a website I started in 2017. At the time, I didn’t know any other Roma fans so I wanted to find a way to connect with some. I set up my Twitter account to do so and then began writing on my website as well. I have always enjoyed writing so it was something I wanted to do for a long time.
Yorkshire is the county in England where I am from, and initially I wanted to find other Roma fans from close to me. But through the website I’ve connected with fans from all around the world! I don’t have a huge audience, but those who do visit come from lots of different places. Maybe one day I would like to organise an event where Roma fans from Yorkshire can meet up, but for now, Giallorossi Yorkshire is simply a website for me to share my thoughts about the club.
I’m still just as passionate about it and write regularly. I don’t have as much content as Planeta Roma does, but I try to put opinion articles, news and some quizzes on there as often as I can! I like doing articles that have an English niche but also ones that cover all aspects of Roma. One interview I did for my website was actually the thing that led to me being asked to write for the club’s website about the women’s team, so it has definitely been worth it.
The other article I’m most proud of is one where I translated some club chants into English to help fans who aren’t Italian understand. If you search ‘AS Roma chants’ in Google, my article is the top result, which is a big achievement for me that I’m amazed by and is a nice reward for the work I do.
